Sustainability at Buahan

Buahan, a Banyan Tree Escape

Our Three Core Pillars of Sustainability

Our Environment • Our Community • Our Responsibility

At Buahan, sustainability is more than a philosophy — it is our way of being. Rooted in the Balinese principle of Tri Hita Karana—harmony between people, nature, and spirit—we live by the belief that when we nurture balance, beauty naturally follows.

Every element of our resort is designed to coexist with its surroundings, empower its people, and preserve the land that sustains us.

Design for Good

Buahan’s design breathes with the land. Inspired by the Balinese Bale Banjar, our open architecture invites the forest, air, and sunlight to become part of every guest’s experience. \n There are no walls, no doors, and no air conditioning—only the rhythm of nature as it truly is.

Over 80% of the resort is built from recycled wood, each piece carrying a story of renewal. Every detail reflects the hands and hearts of local artisans: hand-carved wooden beds and mirrors, ceramic sinks by local ceramic artisan, and handwoven, plant-dyed fabrics from Tarum.

Our design philosophy is simple—to build less and feel more**.** Every villa is a living space where design and nature coexist in quiet harmony.

Stay for Good

The soul of Buahan lies in its people. We invite guests to connect with the community through immersive experiences that celebrate local wisdom passed down through generations.

Embark on a Tri Hita Karana Journey, exploring the harmony between self, nature, and others**. Walk with local foragers** who share the secrets of edible plants and ancient herbal knowledge. Join the Sandikala Walk at twilight—the sacred hour when fireflies dance and stillness reveals the essence of Balinese spirituality. Participate in hands-on sessions at our Ibu Workshop, from coconut oil to palm sugar making, and learn the Traditional Elixir Jamu or Art of Loloh, crafting traditional herbal tonics from local botanicals.

Through storytelling and botanist tales, guests meet the true hosts of Buahan—farmers, healers, and artisans whose lives are deeply intertwined with the land. Each experience is an exchange of meaning: guests take home wisdom, and the community grows stronger through shared purpose.

Uplifting the True Hosts — Our Community

Collaborate for Good

Meaningful change happens through collaboration. At Buahan, we partner with local conservationists and community initiatives who share our vision of living in harmony with nature.

Together with Tegal Dukuh and conservationist Pak Wayan Wardika, we champion the “Bring Back the Light” campaign—promoting organic, chemical-free farming to restore biodiversity and bring back the fireflies that once illuminated our nights.

Through Dukuh Asri, Pak Ketut Sunarka, we work closely with local farmers to nurture sustainable agriculture, from foraging experiences and pop-up lunches to sourcing free-range eggs. These collaborations strengthen our farm-to-table philosophy and uplift local livelihoods.

The Ngadas Project further builds a circular farming model, where Buahan provides livestock to local farmers through a profit-sharing system that transforms organic waste into resources—enriching both land and community.

At Buahan, collaboration is the heart of sustainability—where people, land, and life thrive together.

Operate for Good

Behind every experience at Buahan is a deep respect for the natural systems that sustain life.

Our Zero-Waste Kitchen follows a plant-based philosophy, ensuring that every ingredient is used with intention and nothing is left behind. We source responsibly through a Supplier Code of Conduct, prioritizing fairness, traceability, and environmental care.

Water and energy are treated as sacred resources. Dimmed and timed lighting helps protect fireflies and nocturnal life, while water-based pest control avoids harmful chemicals.

We commit to 100% cage-free eggs, zero single-use plastics in guest areas, and eco-conscious housekeeping that reduces water and energy without compromising comfort.

Every choice, from working with local producers to mindful resource use, reflects our respect for nature and our belief that true luxury lies in responsibility.

At Buahan, sustainability is not a checklist, it is a continuous practice of mindfulness, reflected in every choice, every day.
